If you love cycling enough and are proficient at DIY bike repair, creating your own bike repair business may be a good way to earn a little extra income on the side. This will allow you to work from home and pursue a passion at the same time. But in order to make this happen, you have to be intentional about creating a space for your bike shop to thrive in your home. Consider these three tips:
Establish a Flow
It’s incredibly essential to make sure that you have an efficient workflow. If you have clutter and disorganization, it’s going to be difficult to maintain your sanity during the workday. Especially when you work from home, it’s important to have a standard schedule and practice. Maintain a routine. Make sure the space is conducive to work by having great lighting, comfortable seating, and everything you need within easy reach.
Get Organized
Purchase organizational units so that you have a place for your different tools, papers and more. It’s a great idea to utilize the wall space in whatever room you choose. You can use the walls to hang any necessary tools or gadgets that you might sell to your customers. If your wall space is already occupied by helmets, gloves, and bikes, workbenches create a neatly organized place to put your tools while also creating a designated work surface. You will also need a specific area where you can store your bikes that you’re working on. If you have multiple bikes, a bike rack is a must-have. If need be, don’t be afraid to rent a storage unit when you have a ton of bikes but not enough space.
Designate an Area to Be Your Workshop
You don’t want your living room to turn into the invasion of the broken bikes. Never mix your personal life with business life, and there’s no worse way to do this than to literally have your work inside your living space. There should be a separation so that you can still maintain work-life balance. In order to do this, it’s best to designate a specific area of the home to your bike shop. It might be the garage, it might be the basement.
As you continue to tweak the details and make sure everything works perfectly for your space, understand that if your business grows to a certain extent, you might have to either add an addition to your home or relocate the business. In the meantime, enjoy the flexibility and excitement of running your own bike repair shop and helping other cyclists in your community.
